OutOfMemoryError: Java Heap Space

Allocate more RAM for large modpacks

Error: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
Also: GC overhead limit exceeded

Minecraft ran out of allocated RAM. Large modpacks need more than the launcher default (often 4GB).

How much RAM?

Leave RAM for your OS (16GB system → ~8–10GB for Minecraft). Don’t go past ~14GB - more can make GC worse. Use 64-bit Java.

Set allocation

  • CurseForge: Settings → Minecraft → Java Settings → Allocated Memory
  • Prism: Edit instance → Settings → Java → Maximum memory (e.g. 10240 MB = 10GB)
  • Official launcher: Installations → Edit → More Options → set -Xmx10G in JVM args

Restart the instance after changing. Press F3 in-game - Mem: shows used / max (e.g. ... / 10240MB).
